Dental erosion or acid wear is the irreversible loss of enamel and other structures of the tooth caused by acid. Acid enters the mouth from either an external source, food and/or drink and internal source such as GERD or vomiting. Saliva works to neutralize the mouth and remineralization the enamel, however our diets can make it very difficult for the saliva to keep up.

Intrinsic sources

If you suffer from GERD, acid reflux and/or vomiting your mouth can be under constant acid attacks. Water is the best neutralizer for you. Sipping on water throughout the day will help reduce the damage being caused. Certain toothpastes can provide added strength to your enamel. Ask your dental professional or check the Canadian Dental Association website for approved toothpastes.

Extrinsic sources

What you eat and drink can contribute to acid erosion. Sports, fruit and soft drinks have an acidic pH value around 2.0-3.5, our mouth should approximately be pH 5.5.

List of acidic foods and beverages

  • Citrus, ex

-Apples

-Oranges

-Grapefruits

-Tomatoes

  • Coffee
  • Alcohol
  • Soft drinks
  • Sports drinks
  • Fruit juices
  • Lemon water
  • Apples
  • Vinegar based salad dressings
  • Pickles

Avoiding all of these foods can be difficult especially because some contain vitamins and nutrients needed to maintain a healthy diet. Eating foods and drinking beverages high in acid should be done in moderation. Drinking water after consuming an acidic diet is key to neutralizing your mouth. Wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth after consuming anything acidic and ask your dental professional if an enamel protecting toothpaste is needed for your teeth.
